What is the IBDP?

Understanding the IB Diploma Programme

The IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) is a two-year internationally recognised pre-university qualification for students aged 16–19 (Grades 11 and 12). Developed by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), it is widely regarded as one of the most rigorous and respected secondary qualifications in the world.

IBDP students study six subjects across six groups — at least three at Higher Level (HL) and the rest at Standard Level (SL). In addition, all students must complete three core components: Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the Extended Essay (EE), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS).

Each subject is scored on a 1–7 scale, giving a maximum of 42 subject points. Up to 3 bonus points are awarded for outstanding performance in TOK and EE, making the maximum possible score 45 points. Students scoring 24+ points earn the full IB Diploma. The average score globally is around 30 points.

The IBDP is accepted by universities in 90+ countries including Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, MIT, NUS and all major Indian universities. IB Diploma students consistently outperform their peers in university outcomes.

At Sev7n, our IBDP online tutors are active IB Examiners — the same people who mark the real IBDP exam papers. This gives Sev7n students an unmatched insider advantage in understanding exactly what examiners look for.

📚
6 Subject Groups + 3 Core Components
Languages, Individuals & Societies, Sciences, Mathematics, Arts — plus TOK, EE and CAS. A genuinely broad education.
🎯
HL vs SL — what's the difference?
Higher Level (HL) = 240 teaching hours, deeper content, stronger university signal. Standard Level (SL) = 150 hours. Students choose at least 3 HL subjects.
🏆
Maximum 45 points
42 from subjects (6×7) + up to 3 bonus points from TOK & EE combined. Students scoring 38+ are considered high achievers. Sev7n students average 38–45.
🌍
Recognised by 90+ countries
IB Diploma is accepted by Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, NUS, and all top universities globally. Increasingly recognised by Indian universities too.
⏱️
When to start IBDP tutoring?
Ideally at the beginning of DP1 (Grade 11). But starting in DP2 (Grade 12) is still highly effective with 8–9 months to exams. Emergency support in Jan–March is also available.

TOK, EE & CAS — the components that make or break your score

Together, TOK and EE can award up to 3 bonus points — the difference between 40 and 43. Most students underestimate them. Our IB Examiners don't.

TOK
Theory of Knowledge
Up to 3 bonus points (combined with EE)
TOK challenges students to reflect on the nature of knowledge itself. Students write a 1,600-word TOK Essay responding to a prescribed title, and prepare a TOK Exhibition linking knowledge questions to real-life objects. Our IB Examiners guide students through both components with precision.
Examiner-guided support
EE
Extended Essay
Up to 3 bonus points (combined with TOK)
The Extended Essay is a 4,000-word independent research paper on a topic of the student's choice. It requires a clear research question, proper academic referencing, and structured argument. Our tutors guide students from topic selection through every draft to final submission against the official assessment criteria.
Examiner-reviewed drafts
CAS
Creativity, Activity, Service
Required for full IB Diploma (not scored)
CAS requires students to engage in Creativity (arts and design), Activity (physical activity) and Service (community contribution) throughout the Diploma Programme. While not directly scored, failure to complete CAS requirements results in not receiving the IB Diploma. Our tutors advise on CAS planning and documentation.

IBDP Scoring

How the IB Diploma is scored — and how to maximise every point

The IB Diploma scoring system is unique and strategic. Understanding exactly how marks are allocated is the first step to maximising your score. Our IB Examiners know the scoring matrix inside out — because they set it.

Most students focus only on external exams — but Internal Assessments (IAs) account for 20–25% of each subject grade. With proper IA guidance from an IB Examiner, students can lock in significant marks before their final exams even begin.

The TOK/EE bonus points matrix means that performing well in both components can add up to 3 points — the difference between a 40 and a 43 diploma score, which can significantly impact university offers.

Why Sev7n for IBDP

Why Sev7n is India's #1 choice for IBDP online tutoring

Every claim we make about IBDP tutoring is backed by 17 years of IB Examiner experience — not marketing.

1
Every tutor is an active IB Examiner
Not former. Not "trained in IB." Active — currently marking IBDP exam papers. They know exactly what earns a 7 and what doesn't. No other platform can say this about every tutor.
2
IA feedback from the people who mark IAs
Our tutors have personally marked hundreds of real IBDP Internal Assessments. Their feedback on your child's IA draft is the closest thing to seeing the official marking before submission.
3
Every class auto-recorded on our LMS
Never lose a lesson. Every IBDP tutoring session is automatically saved to the student's dashboard on the Sev7n LMS. Replay any class anytime — especially valuable before mock exams.
4
Mock papers aligned to real IBDP exams
Our mock papers are designed by IB Examiners to match the real exam format, command terms, and difficulty level. Students get detailed marking feedback after every mock — not just a score.
5
TOK and EE specialist support
Most IBDP tutors avoid TOK and EE because they're complex. Sev7n has dedicated TOK and EE tutors who guide students from topic selection through every draft. 3 bonus points are within reach.
6
Monthly progress reports for parents
Parents receive a structured monthly progress report covering class attendance, mock paper scores, IA status, and predicted grade trajectory. Full transparency — always.

Higher Level (HL) subjects involve 240 teaching hours and are studied in greater depth and breadth. Standard Level (SL) subjects involve 150 hours. IBDP students must take at least 3 subjects at HL. HL subjects carry more weight in university admissions — especially for competitive programmes. Sev7n tutors cover both HL and SL for every subject.
Can Sev7n help with IB Internal Assessments (IAs)? +
Yes — IA support is one of Sev7n's strongest services. All our IBDP tutors are active IB Examiners who have personally marked hundreds of real IAs. IAs account for 20–25% of each subject grade — proper IA support can significantly boost the final diploma score.
When should my child start IBDP tutoring? +
Ideally at the beginning of DP1 (Grade 11 / Year 12). Starting early means building strong HL foundations, developing exam technique before it's urgently needed, and having more time for IA and EE preparation. Starting in DP2 is still highly effective with 8–9 months to exams. Emergency support from January to March is also available for students needing rapid improvement.
