About IB Math AI

What is IB Mathematics: Applications & Interpretation?

IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (AI) is designed for students who are interested in developing mathematics for real-world contexts. It emphasises statistics, mathematical modelling, and the use of technology as core tools — rather than abstract proof and pure mathematical reasoning.

AI is the right choice for students heading to social sciences, business, psychology, environmental science, design, or geography — anywhere that applying mathematical thinking to real-world data and problems is more important than theoretical proof.

IB Math AI HL (240 hours) is a rigorous course — it goes significantly deeper than SL in statistics, Markov chains, further calculus for modelling, and includes Paper 3. AI SL (150 hours) is appropriate for students who need solid applied mathematics for their programme.

Both courses include a Mathematical Exploration (IA) — a 12–20 page investigation worth 20% of the final grade. AI IA topics often focus on real datasets, statistical analysis, and modelling — making topic selection and mathematical depth particularly important.

📊
Statistics is the heart of IB Math AI
Descriptive statistics, probability distributions, hypothesis testing, and regression analysis form the core of AI. Students who enjoy data analysis and statistical interpretation thrive in this course.
💻
Technology is a core tool — not a shortcut
The GDC (graphic display calculator) and spreadsheets are integral to IB Math AI. Our tutors coach effective GDC use as a skill — knowing which functions to use and when is itself examined.
🔬
IA exploration — real data, real context
AI IAs often use real datasets — sports data, climate data, social media trends. The challenge is applying sufficient mathematical depth. Our examiners guide students to choose topics that allow genuine mathematical exploration.
University acceptance — check carefully
AI is accepted by universities for most non-STEM programmes. Always verify requirements for your specific programme. Our tutors advise on university mathematics requirements as part of subject choice guidance.
IB Math AI Syllabus

All 5 IB Math AI Topics — HL & SL fully covered

Every topic in IB Math AI HL and SL taught by IB Examiner tutors. HL-only content clearly marked.

Topic 1
Number & Algebra
Sequences & Series Amortisation Financial Maths Logs HL: Voronoi Diagrams HL: Complex Numbers
Arithmetic and geometric sequences, compound interest, annuities and amortisation, loans and savings — financial maths is more heavily featured in AI than AA. HL adds Voronoi diagrams, complex numbers in polar form, and modular arithmetic.
Topic 2
Functions
Linear Models Quadratics Exponential Models Logistic Models HL: Sinusoidal Models HL: Piecewise Functions
Functions as models — linear, quadratic, exponential, logarithmic, and logistic growth models applied to real-world situations. Technology (GDC) is used to fit functions to data. HL adds sinusoidal models, piecewise functions, and more complex modelling scenarios.
Topic 3
Geometry & Trigonometry
3D Geometry Bearings Trig (sin/cos rules) HL: Vectors HL: Graph Theory
3D geometry, surface area and volume, right triangle trigonometry, sine and cosine rules, bearings and navigation. HL adds vector work, adjacency matrices, and graph theory (minimum spanning trees, the Chinese postman and travelling salesman problems).
Topic 4 — Most heavily weighted in AI exams
Statistics & Probability
Descriptive Stats Correlation & Regression Probability Distributions Hypothesis Testing Chi-squared Tests HL: Markov Chains HL: Poisson Distribution
The largest and most important topic in AI. Descriptive statistics, bivariate data, linear regression (Pearson's r), probability distributions (normal, binomial), hypothesis testing (t-tests, chi-squared goodness of fit, independence). HL adds Markov chains, Poisson distribution, and further hypothesis testing. Statistics questions are the most likely to appear in every AI exam paper.
Topic 5
Calculus
Differentiation Integration Optimisation Area under curve HL: Differential Equations HL: Euler's Method
Calculus in AI is applied to modelling — rates of change, optimisation, area under curves, kinematics. Less theoretical than AA, but requires solid GDC use for graphical analysis. HL adds differential equations and Euler's method for modelling population growth, cooling, and other real phenomena.
HL Only
IA Mathematical Exploration
Real-world dataset Statistical analysis Mathematical modelling Personal engagement
Worth 20% of the final grade at both HL and SL. AI IAs commonly use real datasets — sports performance, climate data, economic data — and apply statistical tests or regression models. The challenge is generating sufficient mathematical depth from accessible data. Our examiner tutors guide every stage.
Assessment

How IB Math AI is assessed

IB Math AI uses the GDC in all external papers. Understanding what each paper tests is essential for targeted preparation.

Paper 1 — Technology Required
40%
SL: 1h30m · HL: 2h — Short & extended response
  • GDC required throughout — no non-calculator paper (unlike AA)
  • Short answer and extended response questions
  • Covers all 5 topics with emphasis on statistics and functions
  • Answers shown as well as final values — method marks are awarded
SL & HL
Paper 2 — Technology Required
40%
SL: 1h30m · HL: 2h — Extended response
  • GDC required — longer multi-part extended response questions
  • Often based on real-world scenarios with data provided
  • Statistical testing, regression, modelling questions common
  • Final evaluation question requires justified conclusion
SL & HL
Paper 3 — Modelling Problem
20%
HL Only · 1h — Extended investigative problem
  • One extended investigative modelling problem with real-world context
  • GDC required — spreadsheet-style data analysis often involved
  • Tests ability to apply mathematical modelling to unfamiliar situations
  • Requires structured written justification and interpretation
HL Only
Internal Assessment (IA)
20%
SL & HL · 12–20 pages · Mathematical Exploration
  • Independent mathematical investigation using real data or modelling

Why Sev7n for IB Math AI

Why Sev7n for IB Math AI tutoring

1
IB Examiner tutors mark the real AI papers
Our IB Math AI tutors are active IB Examiners. They know exactly what each statistics question is testing, how hypothesis testing answers are marked, and what the Paper 3 modelling problem looks for.
2
Statistics coaching — the most important skill in AI
Topic 4 (Statistics) is the most heavily weighted in IB Math AI. Our examiners coach every test — t-tests, chi-squared, Pearson's r, regression — with the specific output format and interpretation that earns full marks.
3
GDC technique as a skill
Efficient GDC use is itself examined in AI. Our tutors train the specific GDC functions (statistical tests, regression, graphing) so students use the calculator strategically — not just as a number cruncher.
4
IA topic selection — mathematical depth matters
The most common AI IA mistake is choosing a topic that doesn't allow sufficient mathematical depth. Our examiners guide students to topics where the "use of mathematics" criterion — the hardest to score — can be genuinely maximised.
5
Paper 3 HL modelling preparation
Paper 3 presents an extended modelling problem. Our tutors train the specific mathematical reasoning needed — setting up models, interpreting output, and writing justified conclusions — using past Paper 3s as frameworks.
6
All sessions recorded on Sev7n LMS
Every IB Math AI session is automatically saved. Replay statistics walkthroughs, GDC technique demonstrations, and mock paper marking before every exam — as many times as you need.
FAQs

IB Math AI — frequently asked questions

What is IB Mathematics Applications & Interpretation (AI)? +
IB Math AI is designed for students interested in applying mathematics to real-world contexts. It emphasises statistics, mathematical modelling, and technology use. AI is the preferred maths course for students heading to social sciences, business, psychology, design, or geography — fields where applied mathematical thinking is more relevant than abstract proof.
Is IB Math AI easier than IB Math AA? +
IB Math AI SL is generally considered less demanding than AA HL, but this depends on the student. Students who are strong at abstract algebra and calculus find AA more natural. Students who are strong at data interpretation, statistical thinking, and applied contexts may find AI more accessible. AI HL is still a demanding course — particularly the statistics and Markov chain content. Neither course is "easy" at HL.
Do universities accept IB Math AI? +
Yes — IB Math AI is accepted by universities worldwide for most non-STEM programmes. AI SL and HL are accepted for social sciences, business, psychology, humanities, design and many other programmes. However, most top universities do NOT accept AI (HL or SL) for Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, or Computer Science — these require AA HL. Always check the specific requirements of your target programmes.
What makes a good IB Math AI IA topic? +
A good AI IA topic uses real, accessible data and allows genuine mathematical exploration — not just summary statistics. Topics that work well include: regression modelling (e.g. relationship between two sports variables), hypothesis testing (e.g. comparing performance across groups), time series analysis, or population modelling with differential equations. The "Use of Mathematics" criterion requires going beyond simple calculations — our examiner tutors help students identify topics where this is achievable.
How is IB Math AI different from IB Math AA? +
The key differences: AA emphasises abstract mathematical reasoning, proof, and pure mathematics (calculus, complex numbers, vectors). AI emphasises statistics, mathematical modelling, and real-world application using technology. AA has a non-calculator Paper 1; AI uses the GDC in all papers. AA HL Paper 3 is an investigative pure maths problem; AI HL Paper 3 is a real-world modelling problem. Both have an IA mathematical exploration worth 20%.
