About Cambridge AS & A Level

Where AS & A Level fits in the Cambridge journey

Cambridge A Level is the third and final stage of the Cambridge international pathway — and the most consequential for university entry worldwide.

UK / Global

Cambridge AS & A Level is a globally recognised pre-university qualification for students aged 16–19, developed by Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE). Students typically study 3–4 subjects, choosing from over 55 subjects across Sciences, Mathematics, Humanities, Languages, and Social Sciences.

Unlike the IB Diploma which requires 6 subjects plus core components, Cambridge A Level allows students to specialise deeply in 3–4 subjects of their choosing. This makes it particularly well-suited to students who have a clear career direction — Medicine, Engineering, Economics, Law — and want to build deep expertise in the directly relevant subjects.

Cambridge A Level is externally assessed by Cambridge — meaning the same examiner standards apply whether a student sits in India, UAE, Singapore, or the UK. Grades are awarded A*–E. Universities in the UK, US, Canada, and Australia all accept A Level results, and top UK universities typically set conditional offers of AAA–A*AA for competitive courses.

📘 Cambridge mark scheme taught — not just content
The most common reason A Level students lose marks is not lack of knowledge — it's not knowing exactly what Cambridge examiners want to see in each paper. Every Sev7n A Level session is taught with reference to Cambridge mark schemes and past paper examiner reports.
🎓
Deep subject specialisation
3–4 subjects studied to university-entry depth. Ideal for students with clear career direction — Medicine, Engineering, Law, Finance. Universities see exactly how strong a student is in the directly relevant subjects.
🌍
Accepted globally — same standard everywhere
Cambridge examines and grades every student worldwide to the same standard. An A* in Cambridge A Level Mathematics from India carries exactly the same weight as one from Singapore or London.
📊
Strong IGCSE → strong A Level pathway
A Level builds directly on IGCSE foundations. Students who achieved A/A* at IGCSE in their chosen subjects are well-positioned for A Level. Sev7n supports both stages — often with the same tutor.

AS vs A Level

Understanding AS Level and A Level

Many students and parents confuse the two. Here is the clear distinction — and what it means for tutoring and university applications.

AS Level — Year 12
Advanced Subsidiary Level
First year of the Cambridge advanced programme — roughly half the content of a full A Level
Graded A–E. Examined by Cambridge in the May/June session at the end of Year 12
Can be taken as a standalone qualification — some students drop one subject after AS and continue with 3 to A Level
AS results can be used for conditional university offers in some cases, but most universities require full A Level grades
Sev7n tutors AS Level across all subjects — same Cambridge mark scheme focus, same rigour

Why Sev7n

Why Sev7n for Cambridge A Level tutoring

1
Cambridge mark scheme taught in every session
The single most powerful advantage a Cambridge A Level student can have is knowing exactly how Cambridge examiners award marks. Our tutors don't teach from textbooks — they teach from mark schemes, examiner reports, and past paper patterns. That is a fundamentally different quality of instruction.
2
Past paper coaching as the primary teaching method
Every Sev7n A Level session integrates past paper questions — not as revision add-ons, but as the core teaching vehicle. Students learn by doing exactly what the exam requires, with real-time mark scheme feedback on their responses.
3
Paper 5 — the most undercoached Cambridge paper
Paper 5 (Planning, Analysis & Evaluation) in Sciences is consistently the paper where A Level students lose the most marks — because most tutors don't coach it specifically enough. Our science tutors coach Paper 5 with dedicated sessions, teaching the exact experimental design, data analysis, and error evaluation formats Cambridge rewards.
4
University pathway awareness built in
Our tutors understand what top universities require. A student targeting Medicine at a UK university needs A*AA including Chemistry and Biology — and our tutors prioritise accordingly. University-aware teaching means every session is purposeful, not just syllabus-covering.
5
IGCSE-to-A-Level continuity where possible
Many Sev7n students begin with IGCSE tutoring and continue to A Level with the same tutor. That continuity — a tutor who already knows the student's strengths and gaps — significantly reduces the time lost to diagnosis and relationship-building at the A Level start.
6
Sessions recorded on Sev7n LMS
Every A Level session is saved to the student's personal dashboard. Students replay worked solutions, mark scheme walkthroughs, and past paper corrections as many times as needed. Particularly valuable for Paper 5 practical sessions and for reviewing examiner-specific marking notes.
Student Stories

What A Level students say about Sev7n

★★★★★

"My A Level Chemistry Paper 5 was a disaster in mocks — I kept losing marks on experimental design and I didn't understand why. My Sev7n tutor took two sessions just on Paper 5 technique. He showed me exactly what the mark scheme rewards word-for-word. I went from a D on Paper 5 to an A in the actual exam."

★★★★★

"I was predicted BBC for my A Levels and needed AAA for my Economics degree application. My Sev7n Economics tutor completely changed how I wrote Paper 4 essays — teaching me the exact evaluation structure Cambridge rewards. Final result: AAA. First choice university confirmed."

★★★★★

"Further Mathematics 9231 is brutal and almost no tutors know it properly. My Sev7n tutor had clearly done this before — he knew every paper structure and the exact topics Cambridge cycles through. The LMS recordings meant I could replay his working before every exam. Got an A*."

★★★★★

"I moved from IB to Cambridge A Level mid-Year 12 when we relocated to Singapore. The transition was harder than I expected — different assessment style, different command terms. My Sev7n tutor explained exactly how Cambridge marking differs from IB and rebuilt my approach from scratch. Finished with A*AA."

FAQs

Cambridge AS & A Level — frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Cambridge AS Level and A Level? +
AS Level (Advanced Subsidiary) covers roughly half the content of a full A Level and is typically examined at the end of Year 12. A Level is the complete two-year qualification, examined at the end of Year 13, and is what universities require for admission. The key difference: the A* grade is only available at full A Level — not AS Level. Students who sit AS Level at the end of Year 12 can then complete the full A Level at the end of Year 13 with the additional A2 content. Some students take AS Level as a standalone qualification in a fourth subject they later drop.
Is Cambridge A Level harder than IB Diploma? +
They are different, rather than one being harder than the other. Cambridge A Level requires deeper specialisation in fewer subjects — 3–4 subjects studied to university-entry depth. IB Diploma requires breadth — 6 subjects across different disciplines plus TOK, Extended Essay, and CAS. A Level students often find the subject depth more intense; IB Diploma students often find the breadth and workload management more challenging. Both are accepted by universities worldwide and both are excellent qualifications. The choice depends more on the student's learning style and career direction than on difficulty.
What A Level grades are needed for top UK universities? +
Conditional offers from top UK universities typically range from AAA to A*A*A depending on the course and institution. Medicine at most UK medical schools requires A*AA or AAA including Chemistry and Biology. Mathematics, Physics, and Engineering at Russell Group universities typically require A*AA or AAA. Economics and Law at top universities typically require AAA. These are subject to change — always check the specific course requirements directly with each university. Sev7n's tutors are aware of these requirements and help students prioritise accordingly during tutoring sessions.
When should A Level tutoring start? +
Ideally at the beginning of Year 12 — allowing two full years to build content foundations and develop exam technique progressively. Starting in Year 13 is common but compresses content coverage and exam technique development into one year. If starting in Year 13, Sev7n tutors accelerate the approach — prioritising past paper work and mark scheme coaching from the first session rather than comprehensive content coverage. For students who struggled in Year 12 mocks, January of Year 13 is a critical window to diagnose weak areas and address them systematically before May exams.
Does Sev7n tutor both May/June and October/November A Level sessions? +
Yes — Sev7n prepares students for both Cambridge exam sessions. The majority of A Level students sit May/June (the main session). October/November is smaller but increasingly used by students resitting one or more papers for grade improvement. Our tutors understand the difficulty trends and paper patterns that differ between sessions — and calibrate preparation accordingly. If you are resitting a specific paper in October/November, tell us during the demo class and we will focus the tutoring plan specifically on that paper.
