About Cambridge IGCSE

What is Cambridge IGCSE and why does it matter?

Cambridge IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) is the world's most popular international qualification for 14–16 year olds, developed by Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE). It is offered in 160+ countries, at over 10,000 schools globally — including most international schools in India, UAE, Singapore, Malaysia, and Southeast Asia.

IGCSE results are used for school progression, IB Diploma entry, Cambridge AS & A Level entry, and increasingly by universities themselves as a measure of secondary academic ability. Strong IGCSE grades — particularly in Mathematics, Sciences, and English — are the foundation for everything that follows.

Unlike school-based assessments, IGCSE is externally examined — meaning the final grade depends entirely on performance in Cambridge-set written papers. Mark schemes are precise and consistent. Knowing exactly what Cambridge examiners look for in each paper is the most important preparation advantage — and that is exactly what Sev7n's educators provide.

📘 Cambridge-aligned teaching at Sev7n
Every Sev7n IGCSE session is taught with reference to the Cambridge syllabus, past papers, and mark schemes. Students don't just learn content — they learn to answer Cambridge exam questions in the precise format that earns marks.
🌍
Recognised in 160+ countries
IGCSE is accepted by universities, IB schools, and A-Level providers worldwide. It is the standard international secondary qualification for families living outside their home country.
📊
Core vs Extended — take the right tier
Most competitive subjects offer two tiers. Extended covers more content and awards A*–E grades. Students targeting IB Diploma or A Level should always take Extended tier. Our tutors advise on tier selection and prepare accordingly.
🎓
Gateway to IB Diploma
Most IB schools require a minimum of 5 IGCSEs at grade C or above for Diploma entry, with A/A* in subjects planned at HL. Strong IGCSE preparation directly enables IB Diploma ambitions.
📅
May/June and Oct/Nov sessions
Cambridge offers two exam sessions per year. Our tutors prepare students for both windows — with past paper practice calibrated to the specific session's difficulty trends.

Why Sev7n

Why Sev7n for Cambridge IGCSE tutoring

1
Cambridge mark scheme taught — not just content
The most common reason IGCSE students lose marks is not lack of knowledge — it's not knowing exactly what Cambridge examiners want to see. Our tutors teach the specific answer format, key terms, and mark point structure for every paper type.
2
Past paper coaching — every session
Our IGCSE tutors integrate past paper questions into every session — not just as a revision tool, but as the primary teaching method. Students learn by doing exactly what the exam requires, not by reading textbooks.
3
IB-pathway awareness built in
Most Sev7n IGCSE students are planning to continue into the IB Diploma. Our tutors consciously build the foundational skills — analytical writing, scientific reasoning, data interpretation — that IBDP subjects demand from Day 1 of Grade 11.
4
Extended tier preparation as standard
We default to Extended tier preparation for all students with university ambitions. Our tutors know exactly which questions appear only at Extended tier and coach accordingly — not as an afterthought, but as the standard.
5
Both exam sessions covered
Cambridge offers May/June and October/November sessions. Our tutors prepare for both — understanding which papers appear in each session, historical difficulty trends, and how to peak at exactly the right time.
6
Sessions recorded on Sev7n LMS
Every IGCSE session is saved to your dashboard. Students replay worked solutions, mark scheme walkthroughs, and past paper corrections as many times as needed — especially valuable in the final weeks before exams.
Student Stories

What IGCSE students and parents say about Sev7n

★★★★★

"My son was getting Bs in IGCSE Mathematics and couldn't understand why. His Sev7n tutor looked at his past paper responses immediately — and showed him exactly which mark points he was missing and why. Three weeks later he was hitting A* on practice papers. The Cambridge mark scheme focus is what makes the difference."

★★★★★

"IGCSE Chemistry Paper 6 (Alternative to Practical) was my weakest paper — I kept losing marks on the experiment design questions. My tutor coached me on exactly how Cambridge wants those answers structured. I scored an A* in Chemistry overall. The examiner-style teaching is completely different from school."

★★★★★

"My daughter was aiming for IB Diploma and needed strong IGCSE results for entry. Her Sev7n tutor not only prepared her for the IGCSE exams — he explicitly explained which skills she was building for the IB too. She finished with A* in Economics and A in Biology. IB entry confirmed."

★★★★★

"IGCSE Business Studies Paper 2 case study questions were a mystery to me. My tutor taught me the exact structure — how to use the case study data, apply business theory, and reach a justified conclusion. The LMS recordings meant I could replay each worked example before every exam. Scored an A."

FAQs

Cambridge IGCSE — frequently asked questions

What is the difference between IGCSE Core and Extended tier? +
Most competitive IGCSE subjects offer two tiers. Core tier covers a smaller content range and awards grades C–G. Extended tier covers the full content range and awards grades A*–E. Students who take Core tier cannot achieve grades A* or A. For any student planning to continue to IB Diploma, Cambridge A Level, or a competitive university, Extended tier is strongly recommended — particularly in Mathematics, Sciences, Economics, and Business Studies. Our tutors default to Extended tier preparation unless specifically requested otherwise.
How many IGCSE subjects should my child take? +
Most students take 5–10 IGCSE subjects. International schools typically require a core set (Mathematics, English, at least one science, one humanities subject) plus 2–4 electives. For IB Diploma entry, most schools require 5–7 subjects with strong grades. We generally advise prioritising depth over breadth — better to achieve A* in 6 subjects than C in 10. Our tutors help students allocate revision time across subjects strategically.
Can IGCSE tutoring help with IB Diploma entry? +
Yes — this is one of our primary goals for IGCSE students. Most IB schools require a minimum of 5 IGCSE passes at grade C or above for Diploma entry, with A or A* grades in subjects the student plans to take at IB Higher Level. A student planning IB Economics HL needs strong IGCSE Economics; a student planning IB Chemistry HL needs strong IGCSE Chemistry. Our IGCSE tutors know exactly what IB HL subjects demand and build the right foundations from the start of Grade 9.
Is IGCSE harder than IB MYP? +
IGCSE and IB MYP serve the same age group (roughly 14–16) but have very different assessment approaches. IGCSE is externally examined — Cambridge sets and marks the final papers, and grades are highly standardised globally. MYP is primarily internally assessed by the school using criterion-based marking, with optional eAssessments in Year 5. IGCSE is generally considered more straightforward in structure (clear mark schemes, predictable question formats) but requires strong exam technique. MYP develops deeper inquiry and conceptual skills. Both are strong preparation for their respective next stages — IGCSE leads naturally to A Level or IB, MYP leads to IBDP.
When should IGCSE tutoring start? +
Ideally, IGCSE tutoring starts at the beginning of Grade 9 — allowing two full years to build solid subject foundations before the Grade 10 exams. Starting in Grade 10 (the exam year) is common but puts pressure on covering content and exam technique simultaneously. The most effective approach is to use Grade 9 for content foundation and skill-building, then Grade 10 for intensive past paper practice and exam technique refinement. If you are starting in Grade 10, we accelerate content coverage and past paper work from the first session.
