About IB Math AA

What is IB Mathematics: Analysis & Approaches?

IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA) is designed for students who enjoy developing mathematical arguments, problem solving, and abstract thinking. It emphasises mathematical reasoning and proof, and is the course for students who genuinely enjoy pure mathematics.

IB Math AA HL is widely considered the most demanding subject in the entire IBDP. It goes significantly deeper than SL — covering complex numbers, proof by induction, implicit differentiation, L'Hôpital's rule, and a unique Paper 3 (extended problem-solving paper). A grade 6 or 7 in Math AA HL is highly valued by top universities globally.

IB Math AA SL still covers rigorous content — functions, trigonometry, calculus and statistics — but without the depth of HL. SL is appropriate for students who need solid mathematics for their programme but aren't pursuing STEM at the highest level.

Both HL and SL include a Mathematical Exploration (IA) — a 12–20 page independent investigation worth 20% of the final grade. Topic selection and mathematical depth of the exploration are critical to scoring well.

Sev7n student outcomes
Our IB Math AA students consistently target 6–7 at both HL and SL. With 17 years of examiner experience, our tutors identify exactly where students lose marks and close those gaps systematically.
🎓
Required by top universities for STEM
Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, ETH Zurich, MIT, IIT (via JEE), NUS all require or strongly prefer Math AA HL for Maths, Physics, Engineering, and CS programmes.
📊
Paper 3 — unique to HL
IB Math AA HL has a third paper — an investigative problem-solving paper with no prior knowledge of the specific topic required. Students apply mathematical reasoning to novel situations. Most challenging paper in IB.
🔬
IA exploration — 20% of grade
The Mathematical Exploration requires genuine personal engagement, mathematical depth, and clear communication. Topic selection makes or breaks the IA — a poorly chosen topic limits the mathematics possible.
🧮
Calculator vs non-calculator papers
Paper 1 is non-calculator. Paper 2 allows a GDC. Both require different techniques and strategies. Our tutors coach both paper types with specific exam technique for each.

Topic 4 — Most IA explorations from here
Statistics & Probability
Descriptive Stats Probability Normal Distribution Binomial Distribution HL: Hypothesis Testing HL: Bayes Theorem
Descriptive statistics, correlation, probability rules, Venn diagrams, conditional probability, binomial and normal distributions. HL adds Poisson distribution, hypothesis testing, confidence intervals, and Bayes' theorem — the hardest probability content in AA.
Topic 5 — The hardest topic for most students
Calculus
Differentiation Integration Chain/Product/Quotient Rule Kinematics Area & Volume HL: Implicit Differentiation HL: L'Hôpital's Rule HL: Maclaurin Series HL: Differential Equations HL: Euler's Method
Differentiation from first principles, rules (chain, product, quotient), optimisation, related rates, integration techniques (substitution, by parts), definite integrals, area and volume of revolution, kinematics. HL adds implicit differentiation, L'Hôpital's rule, Maclaurin series, differential equations, Euler's method, and coupled differential equations — a significant amount of content requiring dedicated tuition. Calculus is the most heavily weighted topic in IB Math AA exams.

Why Sev7n for IB Math AA

Why Sev7n is the right choice for IB Math AA tutoring

1
IB Examiner tutors — not just qualified teachers
All Sev7n IB Math AA tutors are active IB Examiners. They mark real exam papers and know exactly what earns marks in Paper 1, Paper 2, and the notoriously difficult Paper 3.
2
Paper 3 specialist coaching (HL)
Most tutors avoid Paper 3 because it's genuinely difficult and novel each year. Our examiners train the underlying mathematical reasoning skills needed to tackle any Paper 3 problem — not just past papers.
3
IA exploration topic selection & guidance
Choosing a topic that allows genuine mathematical depth — without being too advanced or too simple — is critical. Our tutors have reviewed hundreds of IAs and guide students away from the most common pitfalls.
4
Calculator vs non-calculator technique
Paper 1 (no calculator) and Paper 2 (GDC) require different approaches. Our sessions specifically train the algebraic manipulation needed for Paper 1 and the GDC skills that maximise Paper 2 efficiency.
5
Calculus — the highest-weighted topic
Calculus accounts for the largest portion of IB Math AA marks. Our tutors provide dedicated calculus coaching — differentiation, integration, differential equations (HL) — with exam-technique focus, not just concept teaching.

Student Stories

What IB Math AA students say about Sev7n

★★★★★

"My son was struggling badly with IB Math AA HL calculus — differential equations and Maclaurin series were beyond what his school teacher explained. After 10 sessions with Sev7n his mock score went from a 3 to a 6. The Paper 3 coaching alone was worth every penny."

★★★★★

"My IB Math AA IA topic was terrible — I had picked something too complex and couldn't generate enough original mathematics. My Sev7n tutor helped me switch to a better topic and restructure the exploration completely. I ended up scoring 18/20 on the IA."

★★★★★

"What I appreciated most was that my Sev7n tutor knew exactly which parts of the calculus syllabus examiners test most heavily. Every session was targeted — no time wasted on content that rarely appears. My grade went from 4 to 7 in one term."

★★★★★

"The LMS recording feature made a huge difference for IB Math AA revision. My daughter replayed the complex number sessions five times before Paper 1. Having an examiner who knows what Paper 1 tests — without a calculator — made the preparation incredibly targeted."
