About IB Chemistry

What is IB Chemistry HL & SL?

IB Chemistry is a Group 4 science subject that develops students' understanding of chemical structure, bonding, reactivity, and analytical techniques. The 2023 revised syllabus reorganises content into two main strands — Structure (models of matter and bonding) and Reactivity (thermodynamics, kinetics, equilibrium, and mechanisms).

IB Chemistry HL (240 hours) goes significantly deeper — additional content in electron configuration, organic mechanisms, spectroscopy, and HL-only Paper 3. SL (150 hours) covers core content. HL is required for Medicine, Pharmacy, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, and Dentistry at most top universities.

The Internal Assessment (IA) is an individual scientific investigation worth 20% of the final grade. Students design an experiment, collect and process data, and evaluate their method. Our IB Examiner tutors guide the full IA process — from research question through to final error analysis.

⚗️ New 2023 syllabus — fully covered
All Sev7n IB Chemistry tutors are trained on the new 2023 revised syllabus (Structure & Reactivity). If your school is still on the old syllabus, we cover both.
🎓
Required for Medicine & STEM
IB Chemistry HL is required by most universities for Medicine, Pharmacy, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, and related sciences.
📊
Data booklet mastery
The IB Chemistry data booklet contains all the constants and equations. Knowing which page to turn to under exam pressure — and which formula to apply — is itself a skill our tutors coach.
🔬
IA — experimental design matters
Students often lose marks on IA because their research question is too broad or their methodology has uncontrolled variables. Our examiners guide focused, markable experimental design from the start.
⚗️
Organic chemistry — the hardest section
Organic mechanisms (SN1, SN2, addition, elimination, condensation) are consistently the most dropped marks in IB Chemistry. Sev7n tutors dedicate specific sessions to mechanism mastery.

Why Sev7n

Why Sev7n for IB Chemistry tutoring

1
Examiners who mark the actual papers
Our IB Chemistry tutors are active IB Examiners. They know exactly which topics generate the most marks, which command terms require what depth of answer, and how the data booklet should be navigated under exam conditions.
2
New 2023 syllabus fully covered
The revised Structure & Reactivity syllabus changed content organisation significantly. Sev7n tutors are fully trained on the new syllabus — not teaching from outdated materials.
3
IA experimental design coaching
Choosing a research question with a controlled independent variable and measurable outcome is critical. Our examiners have reviewed hundreds of Chemistry IAs and guide students away from the most common design flaws before they start collecting data.
4
Organic mechanisms — dedicated coaching
Organic mechanisms are consistently the most dropped marks in IB Chemistry HL. Our tutors run dedicated sessions on SN1, SN2, electrophilic addition, elimination, and condensation — with curly arrow notation drilled to exam standard.
5
Calculation accuracy under time pressure
Stoichiometry, Hess's Law, pH calculations, Kc/Kp, Faraday — all require accuracy and method clarity. Our tutors coach the exact working-out format that earns method marks even when the final answer is wrong.
6
Sessions recorded on Sev7n LMS
Every IB Chemistry session is automatically saved. Replay mechanisms, calculation walkthroughs, and data interpretation sessions before every exam — as many times as needed.
Student Stories

What IB Chemistry students say about Sev7n

★★★★★

"My daughter was completely lost in IB Chemistry HL organic mechanisms. After 6 sessions with her Sev7n tutor, she had a systematic approach to every reaction type. Her Paper 2 organic section went from near zero to almost full marks. Absolutely outstanding teaching."

★★★★★

"My IB Chemistry IA was a disaster — my research question was too vague and I had no control variables. My tutor helped me completely redesign the experiment. The final IA scored 19/24 — much better than I expected given where I started."

★★★★★

"Equilibrium and buffer calculations were my weakest area. My tutor broke down every calculation type with clear working-out methods. The examiner knowledge meant I learned exactly what method steps to show — not just the final answer. Grade went from 4 to 6."

★★★★★

"The data booklet coaching was something I hadn't expected to need. My Sev7n tutor showed me exactly which page to use for which calculation — and how to use it quickly under exam conditions. That one skill saved me significant time in Paper 2."

FAQs

IB Chemistry — frequently asked questions

What are the hardest topics in IB Chemistry? +
Most students find these topics hardest: electron configuration and periodicity (Structure 1), energetics including Hess's Law and Born-Haber cycles (Reactivity 1), acids, bases, and buffer calculations (Reactivity 3), organic reaction mechanisms — SN1, SN2, addition, elimination (Reactivity 3 HL), and electrochemistry calculations. Our examiner tutors target these specifically in every IB Chemistry programme.
How is the new 2023 IB Chemistry syllabus different? +
The 2023 revised IB Chemistry syllabus reorganises content from the old Topics 1-11 (SL) and 12-21 (HL) format into two strands: Structure (models of matter and bonding) and Reactivity (thermodynamics, kinetics, equilibrium, and mechanisms). The content is broadly similar but the organisation and some assessment approaches changed. All Sev7n tutors teach the new 2023 syllabus — and can also support students on the legacy syllabus where needed.
What is the IB Chemistry IA? +
The IB Chemistry IA is an individual scientific investigation (~10 pages) worth 20% of the final grade. Students design an experiment with a focused research question, collect and process data, and evaluate their methodology including sources of error. It is marked on: Exploration (research design), Analysis (data processing), Evaluation (quality assessment), and Communication (presentation). Our examiner tutors guide every stage from research question selection to final write-up.
Is IB Chemistry HL required for Medicine? +
Yes — IB Chemistry HL is required by the vast majority of medical schools globally. This includes UK universities (standard A-grade Chemistry HL), Indian medical colleges (strong Chemistry performance), NUS, and US pre-med programmes. Some universities accept SL for non-medical science programmes, but for Medicine, Pharmacy, and Chemical Engineering, HL is typically required. Always verify specific requirements with your target institutions.
