About IB Business Management

What is IB Business Management HL & SL?

IB Business Management is a Group 3 subject that develops students' understanding of business theory, real-world case studies, and the tools used to analyse business decisions. It is one of the most popular IBDP subjects globally, particularly among students targeting business, finance, economics or management at university.

The subject covers five units — Business Organisation & Environment, Human Resource Management, Finance & Accounts, Marketing, and Operations Management — each requiring both theoretical knowledge and practical application through real business contexts.

IB BM HL (240 hours) includes additional content and tools including the balanced scorecard, organisational planning tools, and more detailed financial analysis. SL covers 150 hours. HL is assessed via Paper 1, Paper 2, and a pre-seen case study (Paper 3 for HL). SL has Paper 1, Paper 2, and an IA.

What makes IB BM challenging is not just content knowledge — it's the ability to apply tools and frameworks to specific business contexts under exam conditions, and to write balanced, critical evaluations. Our IB Examiner tutor coaches exactly this skill.

📊
Group 3 — most popular business subject in IB
IB BM is widely chosen alongside IB Economics by students targeting business-related university programmes globally.
🔧
20+ business tools to master
SWOT, PEST, Ansoff, BCG Matrix, Porter's Five Forces, Decision Trees, Break-Even, Ratio Analysis and more. Each tool must be applied correctly in context.
📝
IA research project — real business
Students base their IA on a real organisation. Business selection, research question, tool application and evaluation all require examiner-level guidance to maximise marks.
🎯
Evaluation is the hardest skill
Most students score 5 instead of 7 because their evaluation is generic. Our examiner tutor drills context-specific evaluation in every session.

Operations planning, production methods (job, batch, flow, cell), lean production and waste reduction, quality assurance vs quality control, supply chain management, and project management tools. HL adds critical path analysis (CPA/network diagrams) which is a common exam calculation topic requiring dedicated practice.
Business Tools

20+ IB BM tools — applied correctly, not just memorised

The difference between a 5 and a 7 in IB BM is tool application. Most students can describe a tool — few can apply it precisely to a specific business context under exam conditions. Our examiner trains this directly.

🔍
SWOT Analysis
Internal strengths/weaknesses and external opportunities/threats. Must be specific to the business in question — generic SWOT answers lose marks.
🌍
STEEPLE / PEST
External environment analysis. Students must identify and evaluate relevant macro factors specific to the business's industry and context.
📈
Ansoff Matrix
Market penetration, product development, market development, diversification. Used to evaluate growth strategy options with risk analysis.
BCG Matrix
Stars, Cash Cows, Question Marks, Dogs. Classifies products by market share and growth rate to inform investment and portfolio decisions.
💪
Porter's Five Forces
Competitive rivalry, supplier power, buyer power, threat of substitutes, threat of new entrants. Used to evaluate industry attractiveness.
🔥
Force Field Analysis
Driving vs restraining forces for change. Students must weight and evaluate forces — not just list them.
🌊
Break-Even Analysis
Fixed costs, variable costs, contribution, break-even point, margin of safety. Calculations and chart interpretation are both tested.
📊
Ratio Analysis
Profitability, liquidity, and efficiency ratios. Students must calculate, interpret and evaluate ratios in context of the specific business.
🌲
Decision Trees
Expected monetary value calculations with probability branches. Requires both calculation accuracy and qualitative evaluation of limitations.

Why Sev7n for IB BM

Why Sev7n is the right choice for IB Business Management

Every advantage below is specific, real, and impossible to replicate without 17 years of IB BM examiner experience.

1
Your tutor marks the real IB BM papers
Shailey has been examining IB Business Management for 17 years. When she reads your case study response or evaluates your IA, she applies the same mental framework she uses in official IB marking.
2
Tool application coaching — not just theory
Most students memorise what SWOT or BCG Matrix is. Our examiner trains you to apply each tool precisely to a specific business context — the skill that separates 5s from 7s in IB BM.
3
IA business selection and research guidance
Choosing the right real business for your IA is critical — too complex and you can't apply tools effectively; too simple and there's insufficient analysis. Our examiner guides the selection and research question from the start.
4
Pre-seen case study (Paper 3 HL) deep prep
HL Paper 3 requires deep advance analysis of the pre-released company. Our examiner tutor guides a structured analysis framework — industry context, financials, strategic issues — so students walk into the exam fully prepared.
5
Finance & calculation coaching
Unit 3 Finance calculations (break-even, ratio analysis, investment appraisal, cash flow) trip up many students. Our examiner drills every formula type with the exact calculation method that earns full marks.
6
Every session recorded on Sev7n LMS
All IB BM tutoring sessions are automatically saved to your dashboard. Replay case study walkthroughs, tool application examples, and mock paper marking before every exam.

Student Stories

What IB BM students say about Sev7n

★★★★★

"My son struggled with IB BM HL Paper 3 case study preparation — he didn't know how to structure his analysis. After 6 sessions with Shailey he had a complete framework. He walked into the exam confident and scored a 7. The HL case study coaching was exceptional."

★★★★★

"My IB BM IA was going nowhere — I'd chosen a business that was too complex. Shailey helped me switch to a better business and restructure the entire research question. The final IA scored 23/25. Without that guidance I would have lost significant marks."

★★★★★

"The finance unit in IB BM was my weakest area — ratio analysis and investment appraisal kept tripping me up. Shailey's calculation coaching was methodical and specific to how the IB marks these questions. My Paper 2 finance section went from 40% to 85%."

★★★★★

"What sets Sev7n apart for IB BM is that Shailey teaches evaluation as a skill — not as a generic 'discuss both sides.' She showed my daughter exactly how to write context-specific evaluation that examiners reward. Her grade went from 5 to 7 in one term."

FAQs

IB Business Management — frequently asked questions

What is IB Business Management HL vs SL? +
IB BM HL involves 240 teaching hours and includes deeper content in all 5 units, plus Paper 3 (a pre-released case study examined in the final exam). SL involves 150 hours and includes an IA research project instead of Paper 3. Both cover the same 5 units, but HL requires more detailed analysis and additional tools.
What is the IB BM Internal Assessment (IA)? +
The IB BM IA (SL only) is a research project of 1,500 words based on a real organisation. Students identify a genuine business problem, apply relevant BM tools and concepts, and make justified recommendations. It is worth 25% of the final grade. Our IB Examiner guides business selection, research question, tool application and draft feedback.
What business tools do I need to know for IB BM? +
Key tools include SWOT, STEEPLE/PEST, Ansoff Matrix, BCG Matrix, Porter's Five Forces, Force Field Analysis, Fishbone Diagram, Decision Trees, Break-Even Analysis, Cash Flow Forecasting, Ratio Analysis, Investment Appraisal (ARR, Payback, NPV), Gantt Charts, and Critical Path Analysis (HL). The key skill is applying these correctly to the specific business context in the question.
How do I prepare for IB BM HL Paper 3 (pre-seen case study)? +
Paper 3 preparation requires deep analysis of the pre-released company: industry context, competitive environment, financial performance, strategic challenges, and stakeholder issues. Our examiner tutor guides students through a structured preparation framework covering all likely exam question areas. Students who prepare thoroughly for Paper 3 consistently outperform those who rely only on general BM knowledge.
When should I start IB BM tutoring? +
Ideally at the start of DP1 (Grade 11) to build tool application skills progressively and approach the IA without deadline pressure. Starting in DP2 is still effective — 8-9 months is sufficient time to significantly improve exam technique and IA quality. Emergency support in the final term is also available.
