New syllabus, first assessed May 2025 — built around two concepts: Structure and Reactivity. Same IA at SL and HL.
IB Chemistry has two external papers and one internal assessment. Paper 1 (multiple-choice + data-based) is worth 36%, Paper 2 (short-answer and extended-response) is worth 44%, and the scientific investigation IA is worth 20%. External exams account for 80% of the final grade.
The weightings are identical at both levels (Paper 1 36%, Paper 2 44%, IA 20%). HL students study additional higher level (AHL) content, sit longer papers (Paper 1 2 hours, Paper 2 2h30) and complete 240 teaching hours versus 150 at SL.
The syllabus is built around two organising concepts. Structure covers models of the particulate nature of matter, bonding and structure, and classification of matter. Reactivity covers what drives reactions, how much/how fast/how far reactions go, and the mechanisms of chemical change.
Yes. IB Chemistry was restructured for first assessment in May 2025 around the Structure and Reactivity concepts, replacing the earlier topic-and-option syllabus.
