Be a forward-thinking IB learner: Tips for managing yourself during the DP

You might have come across the attribute of being ‘prescient’-one of the  thumb rules to succeed. Is it as easy to become prescient as to spell the word ‘visionary’? To inculcate the self-management skills, is what this attribute calls for. But imagine when the attribute is expected to be used for you guys at the age of 16-18, it might sound overwhelming. It may be fascinating to hear a successful leader talking on a podium about the skill set , but equally challenging  for you to conceptualize, inculcate, and apply the same in real life.

True that in high school you have so many stressors to deal with-self and surrounding expectations, peer pressure, career choice, competitive exams, and above all the curriculum learning outcomes to be met. At the same time, it is unjust to ignore that you are in a vulnerable juncture of learning to manage yourself and the surrounding, strike a balance in socio-emotional response, be sharp and perceptive, and at the same time pay heed to your passion. With so much on the plate, it is obvious that the highschoolers may find life to be crazily intriguing!

It is natural to extrapolate that the aptitude of ‘forward thinking’ is there in the genes. However, not really. It is a learned behavior. This is where the IB curriculum approaches to teaching and learning, the IB pedagogy, IB assessment objectives and outcomes- is a holistic and balanced platter to fulfill your learning needs through inquiry-driven sessions. More than an academically challenging curriculum, IB is a holistically balanced learning methodology with a perfect blend of intellectual humility, socio-cultural tolerance, empathy, gross and fine motor skills. Hence, studying IB helps you as a learner to seamlessly inculcate the skill set of forward-thinking, without trying hard-for the simple fact that forward-thinking skills are entrenched into the IB ATL and IB learner profile. Once you are an IB learner, the forward-thinking skills start seeping into your system and personality, behaviors, attitudes, and aptitudes in shaping you up as a self -regulated learning agent.

Forward-thinking is the foresightedness or prescience you inculcate through the process of inquiry-based learning.

  1. As a forward thinker, you start looking at the surrounding tit bits from local and global context-from granular chunks to a BIG picture of real-life application.
  2. With a steadfast attitude starting to build up as a foundational block, you set your goals firm and work towards achieving than just following the mundane path. Yes, your path might be difficult, but you become a risk taker in setting your firm vision and actionable mission.
  3. While dealing with the available coursework that is there on your plate, you become a visionary learner and look at the futuristic career goals and opportunities. As a curious inquirer, you audit your information pool not to acquire the available information but to construct knowledge through perception, senses, and critical reasoning. Chiseling the forecasting skills based on analyzing data trends, is a practice you perform through the descriptive and statistical inferences in IB internal assessments, IB economics commentary, and extended essays. In fact, evaluation is a chunk of the assessment criteria in almost all the IB subjects.
  4. You inculcate the art of thinking-in one word what is called the cognitive flexibility, through which your mind opens up to explore possible solution paths, solve through a balanced approach of contestability. In fact, what we call a balanced argument is nothing but a negotiation in the workplace. Every bit of the coursework looks for a balanced discussion and evaluation from an open minded IB learner’s perspective.
  5. Being socially balanced, compassionate, and empathetic looks forward to you being a teammate who would be looked upon as a responsible motivator of the organization and eventually as a social agent. As a sensitive and compassionate learner, and caring to others’ emotions sets you apart as an inspirational coworker of high energy, empathy, open mindedness, and emotional tolerance.

Dealing with the IB curriculum you become a self-regulated learning agent with the liberty to voice out  the way which is most suitable for you to learn. IB empowers you to advocate for yourself, know their rights, stay informed, find the right support to ask for help, be determined and adopt the problem solving path. Through the IB curriculum you get to learn the transferable skills-organizational and planning skills- which include set goals, design strategic solutions, manage time, conduct research, generate positive vibes, collaborate, create new ideas, inspire to take up risks, preach and practice stress management skills.

Whatever you learn and practice in the IB coursework like balancing time during breaks in planning for IAs, extended essay- would have its manifestation in your future workplace where time management would be one of the sought after qualities. In fact, from day 1 it is imperative to know about the curriculum, make a balanced calendar for yourself, a holistic planner, and a personalized scheduler taking into account the IB deadlines of submission. In fact, online IB tuitions by online IB tutors,  a perfect mix of asynchronous learning with 1-on-1 tutoring through infusion of sophisticated digital tools, serves as the most balanced learning mode to transform you as a forward-thinker self-regulated learning agent.

If you are an aspirant of the IB curriculum or already an IB student, never disintegrate the IB learner profile from yourself-in fact make it the second you because forward-thinking skill is a lifetime asset for you, not only to succeed in your IB exam but also to accomplish your futuristic goals.
