As a parent, the goal to provide your child with the best possible education can leave anyone in distress. It is even more crucial when your child is in high school, a stage where children are no more considered as children, rather “young adults.” And these young adults come across a phase where they have to finally make a decision about who they want to be and where they want to go. School is their second home, as most of the hours are spent there, which also becomes a defining aspect in their overall development, which eventually influences their career and academic paths. It is unwise to expect them to choose a career at this age, and this makes it essential to choose the right school board. I, as someone who pursued the IB diploma program, have enough to share.
What Are The Advantaged Of IB Over CBSE
BACKGROUND
International Bachelorette (IB) is known as one of the most rigorous but the most proficient boards in the world. It has its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and has a world-renowned presence. On the other hand, The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is an Indian board formed in 1962 to provide high quality and standardized education across India. If your job forces you to travel to different places, then you must choose IB for your child.
Curriculum
CBSE has a very standardized educational system. In 11th and 12th grade, the students are provided with “streams” like medical science, non-medical science, humanities, and arts. CBSE gives limited flexibility with subject choices, and you know what happens with limited options? Limited career paths! Unlike CBSE, IB encourages students to opt for a subject from all the academic streams. A student must choose one subject from language, mathematics, sciences, humanities, and arts. This way, the student can design their stream according to their career path. The broader perspective of IB is way better than the in-depth study of CBSE as the student can be more open-minded and choose a career path beyond what a standard person could think
Moreover, what sets IB apart from CBSE is the fact that IB encourages students to know how to learn rather than what to learn. It helps in the creation of a well-formed mind rather than a well-educated mind. In today’s world, any unidentified knowledge is just a click away. CBSE might be progressive in its way by upgrading its syllabus; however, IB is already futuristic and facilitates learning from the college education point of view.
IB encourages critical thinking and has a lot of research work to get grades. The students have the freedom to choose a topic from each subject they have chosen and prepare a research thesis on it, which is their internal assessment. On top of that, an extended essay is demanded, which is a 4000-word thesis on any topic the student desires. An extended essay is considered equivalent to University-level research. Things like these not only help the student to be well informed and be highly analytical but also be open and internationally-minded. No matter the IB Diploma can be quite the task to achieve, but it prepares the student to thrive in the real big bad world.
UNIVERSITIES
CBSE is considered excellent for students who are planning to stay in India post-high school. However, it’s a myth that IB is no good if you aren’t planning to go abroad! Many Indian universities welcome IB students and the number of such universities only seem to increase. Although indeed, CBSE students are quite at an advantage when it comes to giving entrance tests like IIT-JEE and NEET, IB students really take off when it comes to all the research work that will be demanded afterwards. IB is also the most preferred board worldwide. I am not saying that CBSE students can’t go abroad for further studies, but the chances are comparatively low. Moreover, they are not able to take the pressure that universities put upon them. IB board was created to prepare students for university life, so for these students, it is just a piece of cake. IB students are also given the advantage to get rid of certain subjects if they score well in them, helping them fulfilling their credits at a much earlier stage than all the others. IB board can genuinely be considered as a ticket to the top universities of the world!
Career choices
IB students also become the first choice for any organization as their skill set is much appreciated. They are indeed an asset which no one wants to deny even at a much early stage! IB students know how to think and analyze how to collaborate and how to express their work with so much confidence, which helps them get internships during school and universities without much struggle critically.
Conclusion
Given that a CBSE student is more nationally aware, an IB student upholds a more global outlook. A CBSE student would know how to do things the “right way,” but an IB student would know how to pave the right path due to their tremendous skillset. A CBSE student would be more academically oriented, but an IB student would priorities a more learner-centric attitude. It is your choice now, to shape your child as a responsible, reflective, principled, knowledgeable human being or a person from a science or an arts stream.
